Viz is a popular British comic magazine founded in 1979 by Chris Donald. It parodies British comics of the post-war period, notably The Beano and The Dandy, but with vulgar language, toilet humour, black comedy, surreal humour and generally sexual or violent storylines. It also sends up tabloid newspapers, with mockeries of articles and letters pages. It features parody competitions and advertisements for overpriced ‘limited edition’ tat, as well as obsessions with half-forgotten kitsch celebrities from the 1960-80s, such as Shakin’ Stevens and Rodney Bewes. Occasionally, it satirises current events and politicians, but has no particular political standpoint.

Its success in the early 1990s led to the appearance of numerous rivals crudely copying the format Viz pioneered; none of them has managed seriously to challenge its popularity. It once enjoyed being the third most popular magazine in the UK, but ABC-audited sales have since dropped, to an average of 50,750 per issue in 2014 (from 1.2 million).

Can see 1-100 about but is there a separate page for those after? Got all from 35 onwards plus a sampler that came with a computer magazine but electronic would be nice for travelling. Also is there an electronic version of the Holiday Special from the 80s? That’s the one issue I’ve never read.

Thanks for response. Love reading the old ones. When I pick up Viz now only the cartoons by Davey Jones seem worth it. Barney Farmer ones are reasonable. Many by Thorp/Dury give off an air of creators going through the motions to fill space, especially the pages with three cartoons consisting of 3 or 4 drawings. You know the sort, Roger Mellie/Biffa Bacon/Fat Sl*gs. Only Mrs Brady seems worth it. Decided to cancel my subscription last week after many, many years. Think 10 issues a year asks too much of creators. Going back to 6 per year could increase quality.

I have downloaded The Fat Slags file twice and had the same problem each time. It won’t open with either STDU Viewer or Comic Rack in Windows 7 or 10, however it opens no problem with Perfect Viewer in Android. Could you check this file please?

I had no problem using CDisplayEx but ComicRack did not open it.

This is strange because every other file, apart from this one, opens with all apps on any platform. This particular file must be different from the others in some way.

Just out of interest, how old is Comic Rack? Reason I ask is that in 2017 Rarlabs the Winrar creators changed the default compression from Version 4 to Version 5 and although there’s backwards compatibility it doesn’t go the other way round. If this is the case I’d open the file in a new(-ish) copy of Winrar, unpack it, and pack it up again but make sure you click the RAR4 button to use the old compression. (And if it’s not that? I’m totally stumped!)

You can find issues 101-140 (2000-2004) in a zip file in the link below. Would be cool if there was somewhere with 141 onwards.

Oh, no, I missed the link. I don’t have many to get to complete my collection but I’m trying to replace ones that have advert pages taken out. If possible could you mail the link to me? john*toye*gunnATgmaildotcom (no asterisks)
