Welcome on this blog full of information about British comics and offcourse the comics.

A British comic is a periodical published in the United Kingdom that contains comic strips. It is generally referred to as a comic or a comic magazine, and historically as a comic paper.

British comics are usually comics anthologies which are typically aimed at children, and are published weekly, although some are also published on a fortnightly or monthly schedule. The top three longest-running comics in the world, The Dandy, The Beano, and Comic Cuts, are all British, although in modern times British comics have been largely superseded by American comic books and Japanese manga.

You can access the information and comics through the sidebar.
The comics are mostly in packages from around 100mb, inside these rar-packages you will find the comics in cbr format.dandare

There are no DC Thomson related comics on the site, because i had to remove these.

You can view the comics with any cbr-reader like CDisplay or ComicRack.

Most comics are from the 50’s-80’s with some 90’s.

I only place issues from last century,
so no issues newer than the year 1999.

I did not scan the comics myself only collect them from various sites on the internet, internet archive, Usenet Newsgroups and torrents.
So thanks to all the scanners and uploaders.

This blog is purely ment to preserve the comics and to enjoy them, no financial meanings are involved, if you like the comics buy them as long as they are availabe, because nothing can beat the feeling of reading a real comic.

If you find something wrong (downloads, numbering, information) please let me know so that i can correct the error.

As you may have noticed all DC Thomson titles are deleted because of infringement. I am currently working on it with contacting the representant of DC Thomson, hoping i will get permission to continue with them. If not, don’t worry, i will continue the blog without the DC Thomson related material. So we can only wait and hope what the next day’s will bring.

I hope they come to some agreement. It is very frustrating when publishers sit on a back catalogue of old comics that they have no intention of reprinting but refuse to allow people to share scans of the old comics.

    • Please bear in mind that, for any book, periodical, magazine or comic published in the United Kingdom, the UK’s Copyright Act 1956 applies, as amended by the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988.

Under Section 15 of the Act, which governs publishers copyright, D C Thomson’s copyright lasts for only 25 years from the end of the year in which publication occurs.

Accordingly, they have no copyright under section 15 for any periodical published by them on or before 31st December 1993. And you may wish to point this out to them.

Section 15 of the Act is set out at –

I’ve had a reaction from DC Thomson, unfortunately, it conflicts with their ability to generate revenue from copyright material, that is why i have to remove all related to DC Thomson. I received a list of all titles that need to be removed within 7 days. Offcourse understandable from their point of view.

Can you tell us what titles are effected?

p.s. They’re claim that it conflicts with their ability to generate revenue from copyright material is a load of rubbish. They hoard all these stories and drip feed the ones they think were the most popular ones slowly over years in overpriced collected volumes but ignore so many other stories.

    • You may wish to question their claim that they have any copyright in the material.

Where a periodical was published in the UK only, their rights exist only under the UK copyright Acts. Those Acts limit the publisher to a 25 year period of copyright: see my comment above for the details.

Their copyright under section 15 of the Act has expired for all comics published by them more than 25 years ago, i.e. published before 1994. As publisher, they only have section 15 rights for the first 25 years, not forever.

      • In my opinion, under the 1988 Copyright Act they would have to show that you are actually infringing their copyright (if they have any, which is a point you may want to deny, as per my comment above).

In order to prove an infringement, they must prove they have any copyright in existence, e.g. under section 15. But, additionally, they must also prove an infringement: I think it may be the law, under the 1988 Act, that you only infringe another person’s copyright if you both provide a copy *and* make a charge for it. If no money is paid for the copy, there is probably no infringement.

I strongly suspect that this is at the heart of their lawyer’s (possibly spurious) claim that they are suffering a so-called “loss” of revenue. Unless they can show you are being paid for the copies, they probably have no valid case in regard to the alleged “infringement”, because as I understand the 1988 Act it is not an infringement to give away a copy as a gift, which is what you are doing.

So you might want to ask them to (a) prove that they have any copyright in magazines published more than 25 years ago, and (b) to prove that any infringement is legally possible where no money has been paid for the copy.

Obviously, you might remove from this site any periodicals which have been published in the last 25 years, i.e. in or after 1994, but purely as a gesture of goodwill since, as no money is paid for downloading them, there is still no infringement (even though copyright certainly exists under section 15 in respect of these).

But it is far from clear that D C Thomson has any legal rights under the Act, since in most cases (a) the 25 years have expired *and* (b) no money has changed hands.

I can only offer a layman’s opinion, and obviously it is your decision, but from reading the 1988 Act, given how old the material on your site is, it does appear that D C Thomson Ltd will struggle to prove they have any valid claim in these circumstances.

Just trying to help…a site called Rarelust posts free film downloads, and there is a dmca tab on their homepage. It may be worth reading to see if there is any helpful info. It seems they will remove material under certain circumstances, but the law works both ways…there is a lot of stuff on their site.

Of all those comics I suspect you don’t have an argument re Commando. It is still being published plus they do republish old comics. I am sure that would be a pretty strong case.

It will be a shame the others go though since I don’t suppose DC will ever republish any of them with exception of maybe extracts from Beano and related titles

I had contact with DC Thomson again. They had very reasonable, and more important, legal arguments. So there is nothing left to do then remove everything DC Thomson related. I will do that this weekend.

This is just simply DC Thompson throwing the toys out of the pram and they do this every 10 years or so which does nothing for their reputation, apart from commando as already mentioned I can’t see any reasoning for their action, they are responsible for the destruction of the UK comic industry back in the eighties, all those comics gone forever just so the beano, dandy and commando were the only option available to the next generation and look at them now. Grow up D C Thompson !!!!!

I’m disappointed about the DC Thompson DCMA takedown, but not surprised. They’ve always been litigious. Back in the 90’s they kept trying to sue Viz comic, over the parody characters in Viz. It ended up with Viz creating a character named “DC Thompson”, whose defining characteristic was him being a tight arsed killjoy. Viz were never bothered by DC Thompson ever since.

Glad I got the collection of Starblazer, although I thought it was a Fleetway publication (Maybe because the artists also did Fleetway stuff). I did manage to grab the bulk of the Buster stuff, before they were taken down.

I don’t understand D C Thompsons action at all, they use American copyright law to get their way and have stuff removed in Europe but allow American sites to still keep it up somebody out there needs educating and in my opinion its the female solicitor who is representing Thompsons. Britain will be leaving Europe shortly I reckon we wait a month then put it all back up and let Thompson’s swivel, or better still somebody make a database of email addresses to which comics can be requested and made available, just a thought I’m sure we can all chip in tittles.

This was a silly decision by DC Thomson. It was obviously taken by persons who have no care about comics. What were they thinking, were they afraid that they lose money? How?These collections have sentimental value. They are a little treasure for us who want to remember our childhood. This attempt to digitally collect all of these comics is an advertisement to their company. It also shows to young people their history in the area of comics. And they demand to stop it. And they think that they do good to their company…
    I am so sorry….
