Welcome on this blog full of information about British comics and offcourse the comics.

A British comic is a periodical published in the United Kingdom that contains comic strips. It is generally referred to as a comic or a comic magazine, and historically as a comic paper.

British comics are usually comics anthologies which are typically aimed at children, and are published weekly, although some are also published on a fortnightly or monthly schedule. The top three longest-running comics in the world, The Dandy, The Beano, and Comic Cuts, are all British, although in modern times British comics have been largely superseded by American comic books and Japanese manga.

You can access the information and comics through the sidebar.
The comics are mostly in packages from around 100mb, inside these rar-packages you will find the comics in cbr format.dandare

There are no DC Thomson related comics on the site, because i had to remove these.

You can view the comics with any cbr-reader like CDisplay or ComicRack.

Most comics are from the 50’s-80’s with some 90’s.

I only place issues from last century,
so no issues newer than the year 1999.

I did not scan the comics myself only collect them from various sites on the internet, internet archive, Usenet Newsgroups and torrents.
So thanks to all the scanners and uploaders.

This blog is purely ment to preserve the comics and to enjoy them, no financial meanings are involved, if you like the comics buy them as long as they are availabe, because nothing can beat the feeling of reading a real comic.

If you find something wrong (downloads, numbering, information) please let me know so that i can correct the error.

    Tammy Annual 1982, 1983 & 1986 rescans, I think we’re there on those now.

5 x Comets. Rust and photogravure is not a great combination but I’ve cleaned up as best as I can.

7 x Funny Wonder/Wonder. If there’s an uglier comic cover layout than late 40s Wonder I’ve yet to see it.

    Hi Boombox

Thank you for the Comets, they and Suns are favourite. Also liked the Tammy rescans. With your girl comics you have lured my away from the male comics. Good stories and great artwork.

    Thank you

No problem, partial to fifties Comet & Sun myself, always had a solid line-up and some great art, shame they both got thrown under the bus at the end of the decade.

Many thanks to Boombox for his hard work and all scanners and uploaders. I too have discovered the girls’ comics by visiting this site. I agree with earlier comments about artwork and stories – particularly 1960s Girls Crystal and all the World War II stories, both in comics and picture libraries. Keep up the great work – it is much appreciated. Regards Ian

The only thing I’ll say about Girls Crystal is it really freaks me out how everyone in Cherry and the Children looks normal apart from Cherry, who looks like some sort of haunted Victorian doll.

    3 x The Jolly Comic

    https://www.mediafire.com/file/d4ph6sl5zm1786u/JollyComicX3.zip/file

The Jolly Comic was launched by Amalgamated Press in 1935, the last of their old-style ‘penny blacks’ – which was odd, as they’d moved firmly over to penny coloureds like Tip Top and Jingles by then. It’s a fairly standard Dick Chance group comic with the usual contributors like Roy Wilson, Bertie Brown, John Jukes, Charlie Pease etc as well as an action strip on the back page, but doesn’t seem to get a lot of attention.

According to Denis Gifford it ran Popeye reprints at one point, which would make it one of the first times that AP licenced overseas material (as opposed to either just stealing it, or making their own obvious clone). Jolly was belatedly added to the 3-colour crowd in 1939, before merging with Comic Cuts that October after 250 issues. While it’s possible this was due to the war it would be a bit of an outlier as nothing else was cancelled at the same time, so it was more likely a combination of AP finally admitting it was never going to take off and the impact of The Dandy.

Yeah, coloured paper is an odd one, I’m sure it looked okay when these things were new but any fading makes it irritating… I mainly include it for curiosity and because I already have it as part of the process towards the B&W (especially where it’s mainly on 8 pagers) but I only read the monochrome versions!

Straddling the line between a magazine that has stories in it amd a story paper that has articles in; Lofts and Adley don’t count it in Old Boys Books and it’s unlikely they didn’t know of it, but I got it in a job lot and can’t resist this sort of thing.

That is good, artwork is great and loved Baron Brown. Weird how they did the layout with the actual colour cover being the third page. Nice military plate. Saw another copy in a newspaper archive done the same

thank you for the great scan

Thanks! I was quite surprised about the casual use of colour compared to the “SPECIAL COLOUR NUMBER” fuss comics of the time made.

I wasn’t aware of Matt Marriott before I saw your postings of the strips.

Needless to say, but this is a marvelous series done by the stunning artist Tony Weare!

You’re welcome. I have at least 14 more stories planned, of good quality. I am looking for reprints done in Scandinavian countries (as well as amateur ones unfortunately now unavailable from the All-Devon Comics Club). If someone could help me…. Anyway, yes, Matt Marriott is a masterpiece, and not only for the drawings. Edgar’s texts are also excellent.

Hamlyn story books. IIRC these were generally aimed at the Christmas Market bit weren’t really annuals. They were loosely themed collections of short stories, mixing famous authors (typically either from the public domain or already published by Hamlyn) and the occasional compilation from an AP/Fleetway story paper or comic. Many were edited by Leonard ‘Napoleon’ Matthews, who worked in various capacities on Knockout, Sun, Look and Learn, Ranger, Princess, Buster etc.

All Web finds, so credit to the dedicated maniacs who scanned these beasts.
