Welcome on this blog full of information about British comics and offcourse the comics.

A British comic is a periodical published in the United Kingdom that contains comic strips. It is generally referred to as a comic or a comic magazine, and historically as a comic paper.

British comics are usually comics anthologies which are typically aimed at children, and are published weekly, although some are also published on a fortnightly or monthly schedule. The top three longest-running comics in the world, The Dandy, The Beano, and Comic Cuts, are all British, although in modern times British comics have been largely superseded by American comic books and Japanese manga.

You can access the information and comics through the sidebar.
The comics are mostly in packages from around 100mb, inside these rar-packages you will find the comics in cbr format.dandare

There are no DC Thomson related comics on the site, because i had to remove these.

You can view the comics with any cbr-reader like CDisplay or ComicRack.

Most comics are from the 50’s-80’s with some 90’s.

I only place issues from last century,
so no issues newer than the year 1999.

I did not scan the comics myself only collect them from various sites on the internet, internet archive, Usenet Newsgroups and torrents.
So thanks to all the scanners and uploaders.

This blog is purely ment to preserve the comics and to enjoy them, no financial meanings are involved, if you like the comics buy them as long as they are availabe, because nothing can beat the feeling of reading a real comic.

If you find something wrong (downloads, numbering, information) please let me know so that i can correct the error.

Pixie Annual 1974. Not seen that sort of animation cel style of colouring on an IPC annual before, kinda like it.

Pixie was a weekly launched by IPC in late 1972 to see of there was a market for a girls comic between the nursery titles and the orphans, cripples, crippled orphans and orphaned cripples of the girls’ comics. Presumably there wasn’t, as even with a fair quota of reprints it was cancelled and merged with June.

I’ve processed all Whizzer and Chips updates, so these pages must be up to date right now. If you notice an issue missing from which you believe was in a comment please let me know so i can check this, it’s always possible i overlooked 1 or more issues. I am aware that some covers are not showing, i try to correct that later this week, and try to make all covers the same size also.

Originals badly damaged, with missing pages  graffiti, tears, discolouration, etc. As such only put basic effort into tidying scans. That’s all the Boys’ Cinema I have, not on my active “get” list for the time being but I’ll pick them up if I see them as cheap as these were. Apparently the annuals issued from 1932 to 1953, though not 100% sure it ran through the war.

    -School Friend Annual 1965 (rescan), 1968, 1970

Originals had severe browning which wasn’t always removable without losing the palette. These are kinda done as far as I’m concerned, if better copies land in my lap I’ll rescan some pages, but I won’t be actively hunting them ahead of anything we don’t have.

I am planning to do some sort of checklist for AP/Fleetway/IPC annuals so we can nail down haves, wants and partials, but I’ve got about 15 more to scan first.

*puts on oversized nerd glasses* it certainly did; the big, big kicker was the fall of Norway; Amalgamated Press hurriedly cancelled a bunch of titles that were still selling more than 2000 AD ever has simply because they didn’t have the paper allocation to print them in profitable numbers – Jester, Puck, Butterfly and I think Joker or Golden went the same week, the story papers were gutted, etc. IIRC they pared the annuals down to four or five – Girls Crystal, School Friend, Knockout and Radio Fun I think were published every year in wartime, maybe one or two others. Like the weeklies, a whole ton of them ended after the 1940 editions – Chips, Puck, Butterfly, Sunbeam, Funny Wonder, Schoolgirls Own, Jester – and didn’t start back up again.

And it was double-edged too – there were huge drives for scrap paper and so a lot of what *was* printed was recycled by people doing their bit (including publishers clearing out a lot of inventory and file copies, partly to do their bit and partly because of fire safety). In some ways it’s surprising that so much pre-1945 stuff survives.

Will do! =) Hoping to knock something together over the next couple of days around work.

One of the reasons I get faintly irritated with the leeches is that the damage we could do with a bit of coordination is frustrating… Aside from a few wartime titles and the odd bit of fan boy bait like Misty, annuals are a fiver at most for anyone in the UK. If 10% of the people who downloaded from me alone chipped in with an annual scan every month we’d be done in no time and start blowing holes in the weeklies (which again are largely cheap).

(Incidentally, anyone who contributes scans, information or even a passable stab at conversation can ask me to reupload and I’ll do it when I get time – though strangely those are always the people happy to wait for Boutje’s updates…)

My scanning pile at the moment: –

School Friend 73 up, minus whatever ones are on here

      June 62, 63, 82

      Girls Crystal 66

      Tip Top 54-55

Tammy all the ones not already on here

      Jag 72

      Valentine 74 to 76

      Penny 80

June Book of Strange Stories (I forget which one, waiting for an A3 scanner opportunity as it actually has resale value)

I have a vaguely alphabetical running order and am occasionally rescanned stuff I did on vFlat as and when I feel like it.

Weeklies at the moment The Project means I’m only actively going after 1950s and earlier, so it’s probably not worth listing as we’re unlikely to both randomly turn up the same issue of Jester or whatever

Great work – 300 dpi is fine for comics, maybe 400 if you want a clearer look at the dots! Maybe 200 or 150 for hefty annuals for a little less work (or time anyway).

I guess people know how to change the extension to .cbr (or .cbz but it would still be a rar file I think). I prefer cbz (zip) myself simply because it’s open source (and native to windows).

    Hi Boombox.

You need to invest in an A3 scanner sooner than later.

I run an, A3 Epson GT20000, caters for very thing scanning wise. Their old, noisy & not the quickest, but i like them & what’s the rush.

Though when i upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, when it first came out, i found it wasn’t compatible with Windows 10 Pro, so i had to go into the windows setting, check a few boxes etc, now it runs perfect.

Also have another, Epson GT20000 A3, & Epson GT15000 A3, as back ups & other A4’s as back ups.

    Caveats:

    • Not bothered with completed titles or non-fiction titles
    • Entirely reflects personal preferences and definition of complete
    • Does not count stuff I have but haven’t yet scanned

In 95% of the issues they can solve it theirself if they care to look through comments on this site with enough solutions offered, or even better try to find a solution on the internet themselves.
