This magazine that was originally named after a great footballer, and was launched as Raich Carters Soccer Star in 1952 and dropped the Raich Carter title 3 years later in 1955, reverting to the simple title Soccer Star.
Between 20 September 1952 and 19 June 1970 it ran for an amazing 936 issues.
The issues werent numbered in the same way as most other magazines, they used a volume based format with a season by season numbering system with 52 weekly issues.
It was a newspaper type publication with the majority of its content being in plain black and white, in fact it wasn’t until the late 60’s that they included full colour front and back pages.
Many believe the beginning of the end for the Soccer Star was the introduction to the football magazine market in 1967 of Jimmy Hills Football Weekly, however it managed to continue until 1970 when it was incorporated into World Soccer which had been running since 1960

I daresay a few of these covers will eventualy find their way onto my second soccer board on Pinterest. In fact one already has, the one with the goalie making a save.

It’s always fun to see covers of old magazines, must be the nostalgic feeling to me or are they really so much nicer as the ones today.
