Cheeky Weekly was a British comic published every Monday by IPC Magazines Ltd. It ran for 117 issues from (issues dates) 22 October 1977 to 2 February 1980, failing to be published for 3 weeks in December 1978 due to an industrial dispute. It merged with stable-mate Whoopee!, initially as a 16-page pull-out section. The title character originated in an earlier comic called Krazy as a character in the strip The Krazy Gang and also the star of the ‘Ello, It’s Cheeky feature, and proved popular enough to get his own comic, which managed to outlive Krazy itself. The first issue came with a free “Red Jet Rattler” (a build-it-yourself model aeroplane).

Strips included…

“Calculator Kid”
“Fangs of Fear”
“Paddywack”
“The Skateboard Squad!”
“Tub”
“Walter Wurx”

Snail had been Cheeky’s faithful (but silent) slimy sidekick since issue 6 of Krazy in November 1976, but over two and a half years later our mollusc mate was elevated to become the star of his very own feature.

Snail of the Century was the last original strip to commence in Cheeky Weekly, making its debut in the edition dated 14 July 1979 and completing the comic’s ‘new look’ which had been initiated a week earlier.

It took him nearly 42 years to finally get his name SHELLdon.

In his new comic strip, which is called ”SHELLdon the Slimy one.”

He slithers here, there and everywhere.

Where did the word ”Paddywack” originated from ?

The phrase originated from the old English nursery rhyme, “This old man”. Nick nack or “knick knack” refers to the sound produced when playing the bones, as a musical instrument that later evolved into using metal spoons held loosely between the finger and stroked across a board, a shoe or most commonly the fingers of the opposite hand.

Each verse refers to the common practice in Ireland of of after a feast of lamb or swine, taking the rib bones and fashioning them into a musical instrument, using it as a rhythmic instrument of an impromptu band that might also include a lute and singers.

Paddywhack has several meaning and it is unclear which meaning the nursery rhyme intended. One definition is the tough elastic ligament found in many four legged animals such as a lamb that holds the head up. It was often eaten but is tough and may have been fed to the farm dog and referred to as as a bone. I tend to think it was referring to this definition and think the entire line in the nursery rhyme means that after playing the bones and singing songs after the meal, that the bones and paddywhack was given to the family dog to eat.
    nick nack paddy wack

This old man, he played one,
    He played knick-knack on my thumb;
    With a knick-knack paddywhack,
    Give the dog a bone,
This old man came rolling home.

This old man, he played two,
    He played knick-knack on my shoe;
    With a knick-knack paddywhack,
    Give the dog a bone,
This old man came rolling home.

This old man, he played three,
    He played knick-knack on my knee;
    With a knick-knack paddywhack,
    Give the dog a bone,
This old man came rolling home.

This old man, he played four,
    He played knick-knack on my door;
    With a knick-knack paddywhack,
    Give the dog a bone,
This old man came rolling home.

This old man, he played five,
    He played knick-knack on my hive;
    With a knick-knack paddywhack,
    Give the dog a bone,
This old man came rolling home.

Question left, is how does he keep himself supplied with enough Bubble Gum in order never to fall down ?

Sadly , Krazy lasted just a whole eighteen months (continuing as an annual for several years until 1985) but as Cheeky had proved he had legs (and teeth) he was given his very own comic – Cheeky Weekly in October 1977.
Cheeky continued a similar theme as originated in Krazy , but losing the Gang (who went on to appear in their own weekly strip in whizzer and Chips).
How Cheeky managed to be in both comics is truly amazing, in one he wears his Jersey with a K ., and in the other he wears a Jersey with a C ., — it makes you wonder if he had a twin double or a cousin or something with the same name — just spelt different — one being Cheeky and the other Keechy — Ha ha!

Cheeky Weekly Comic and Krazy Comic are to be revived with the new Title ”Cheeky and Krazy weekly” with new Characters for Cheeky to meet.

    Keechy is his cousin.

The Snail has a name now – his name is SHELLdon.

He slithers here, there and everywhere.
Just like Cheeky got his side kick SHELLdon the slimy one, his Snail, years before, in Buster comic, Buster also had a pet Worm called SQUORM.
Plans are made for ”SHELLdon the Slimy one [Snail] to meet up with SQUORM the Squigly one.”

This one of the following stories :

Yikky-Boo went Bowling with Walter Wurx, also with the rest of our Team of Cartoon Artists. [Terry Bave, Frank McDiarmid, Ian knox]
There was a tournament of 11 competitors in ten pin bowling, with the result, that Yikky-Boo being the ultimate winner!
It is not surprising, with his blood-curdling cry, that he frightened the bejabbers out of everyone.

Walter wurx was affected very badly, by the whole experience of ten pin Bowling, which is not surprising, considering, when there was a SPLIT in the game it remind him to split and go to the little room, also when there was a STRIKE, it reminded him to strike to run to you know where, also the same with a SPARE, he was reminded he cannot spare a moment to go do a tinkle, also when there was a GUTTER Ball, it remind him he had GUTTER [Go to] the Loo.
Walter Wurx was introduced to our chinese friend Bli Bli Bli bli Bloop, when he heard his name BLI BLI BLI BLOOP, it reminded him to go to the little room.

Baker’s Boy meets Emma ”BUNTON” and cracks a joke about her name, reminds him of the ”TON of BUN’s” in his tray.
As for Gunga Jim and Emma Bunton, sparks flied between them, over the copyright of the expression ”SPICE UP YOUR LIFE”, Gunga Jim keep insisting that ”Spice up your Life”, originated from India with Herbs and Spices in Curry, he kept saying ; ”Curry, Curry Hot Stuff, it will SPICE UP YOUR LIFE.”
Yikky-Boo let out his Blood-curdling Cry and got 10 Lane STRIKES at one go in ten pin bowling.
Gunga Jim argued by saying : ”Curry Curry Hot Stuff, they are not STRIKES, as you shattered the Pins, SPLIT them to pieces, so they are all SPLITS!”

Yikky-Boo gets the shock of his life when he meets Danga-Boo-Boo, as he yells much louder.
    Is Danga-Boo-Boo more louder then Yikky-Boo ?
Although Yikky-Boo got a shock of his life for once, after scaring so many people over the years – – he is more determined then ever to set the record straight, by coming up with a louder noise then ”YIKKY-BOO” or ”DANGA-BOO-BOO” !
What new noise will it be ?
With time it will all be revealed, with more ”SHOCK’S and SCARE’S” in store for everyone in ”Cheeky and Krazy Town!”

This funny scenario is one of the new story in the revived Cheeky Weekly.

Hid Kid finally reveals himself to everyone and explains why he hid all those years !
”Hid Kid” had many reasons to hide his face from the world. Here are some of the reasons :
1] ”Hit Kid” from Krazy and ”Hid Kid” from Cheeky are related. They are both Cousins. ”Hit Kid” was hired to do contracts to Hit on bullies of local kids. As his Cousin ”HIT KID” also never shown his face, Bullies who had a HIT on them, went out for revenge to find him, assuming that HIT KID never showed his face, they thought it was ”HID KID”. So ”HID KID” went into hiding not to be harmed.
2] ”Yikky-Boo” cannot sneak up behind and frighten him.
3] ”HID KID” was also scared of LIBBY, that she might wallop him with her Protest Board, another reason to hide.
4] ”HID KID” was also scared of LOUISE, that she might accidently Kiss him too, if she knew what he looked like. [He also was another Cousin of Cheeky and looked like him].

Louise still puckers up her lips to try and give Cheeky a Kiss, and finds out she made a mistake, by kissing a Monkey instead.
Of course the Monkey went Bananas and now is chasing Louise everywhere, and she desperately tries to give the Monkey the slip and Cheeky cannot resist by saying : ”Now you know how I felt all those years”
The Monkey that keeps chasing Louise everywhere is named ”Monkey MONK KEY”, and he has a bald patch on top of his head, which makes him look like a Monk and he runs around holding a Key, to try to unlock Louise Heart for him.
It was Love at first sight for him, and he is absolutely Banana’s for Louise.
Cheeky is happy, finally he has her not bothering him anymore, as she is running away from the Monkey all the time.
Cheeky says : ”Ooo Hay the Noo ! Serve’s her right!”

In the new improved revised Cheeky and Krazy Weekly ”Elephant on the Run” and the ”Man in the Plastic Mac” will be back for more running and chasing.
In one of the stories , you will also see Louise running away while being chased by the Monkey Monk Key trying to kiss her.
Then the Man in the Plastic Mac says : ”That’s new ! should I look into this, if there is a reward.”
The Elephant on the run says to Louise : ”At least you know how I feel running away from being chased.”
Louise reply back to the Elephant : ”Have you ever had a Monkey try to kiss you ?”
The Monkey screams at Louise : ”Come back. I love you, marry me.”

What is the Mystery behind Bubblegum Boy ? How did he get up into the Sky ? Will he ever come down ?
    Soon to be revealed !
Bubblegum Boy once was Chewing gum, trying to blow a big bubble, as he got carried away seeing how big he can make it, it just lifted him off the ground [he literally got carried away] and due to desperation in his new found predicament, he just keeps blowing his Bubble all the time, so he will not plummet to the ground.
Question left, is how does he keep himself supplied with enough Bubble Gum in order never to fall down ?
That Mystery will be revealed also in the new ”Cheeky and Krazy Weekly.”
The Parachutist that keeps landing in the wrong place, is revealed to be a secret agent, also has been supplying Bubblegum Boy with Bubble Gum so he be okay.
That solves the Mystery how he kept supplied, but leaves the Question , why not the parachutist help him come down with him , with the parachute, or supply him with a parachute to come down ?

    New Characters :

    1] ”Jean No Home”
She has no permanent address, lives in Pillar Boxes, Telephone Booths, Drains, etc …

    2] ”Sheila Suspicious”
She is absolutely Suspicious of everyone and does not trust anyone and absolutely Paranoid.

    3] ”Woonga Baga Lulu”.
    He is from Africa.
He keeps chanting : ”Woonga Baga Lulu” and everyone keeps running away from him, thinking he is trying to cast a spell on them.
Reason they think this, is because it reminds them of ”Disaster Des” and his saying : ”Doodle Dum Doodle Dee” and it brought nothing but Disaster.
Could they perhaps related in some way ?
The answer is No ! However there is a logical explanation to the chant ”Woonga Baga Lulu” and everyone is scared for no reason.

    4] ”Jack Mikel”
Who is the new Kid on the Block ?
    [son of Michael Jackson]
Disco Kid is surprised by his moves, and joins in dancing alongside with him.

    Frank McDiarmid RIP

I’m so sorry to pass on the news (as published on downthetubes) that Frank McDiarmid has passed away.

Frank was one of the mighty figures in British comics (see his obituary in the link above), and his zenith was undoubtedly Cheeky Weekly. I would go as far as saying that the toothy funster’s title was Frank’s comic, so inextricable was the link between the multitudinous funny folk of Krazy Town and the artist who illustrated their weekly pun-strewn escapades. Frank clearly had a lot of fun illustrating the gag-packed pages and he took full advantage of the freedom he was given, cramming extra jokes of his own into every imaginatively-constructed page. So much so that he became a character in his own comic.

From what I’ve read about Frank it’s clear he was always happy to reply to Cheeky fans who contacted him and would often send them specially-drawn pictures of his striped-jersey-wearing creation.

Those of us reading comics in the late 70s were so fortunate to be able to experience the ground-breaking, hilarious Cheeky Weekly. Thanks for all the fun, Frank.

My condolences to Frank’s family and friends.

Frank McDiarmid (who died January 2021), was a British comics artist best known for his work on Roger the Dodger in the Beano and on IPC humour titles such as Whizzer and Chips, Cheeky Weekly, Krazy Comic, Whoopee!, Wow! and Monster Fun. Strips he drew include Cheeky (for which he created an extensive supporting cast including Lily Pop, Yikky Boo!, Baker’s Boy and Constable Chuckle), Kid Kong, Boy Boss, Frankie Stein and Willie Bunk. He later moved into the field of fine art.

He was 75 or 76 years old.
