Another for the list: The Bog Paper (Marvel UK, 1989)

With the standard UK comics market faltering in the late 1980s, seeing many long running titles coming to an end, various UK publishers began looking for an alternative audience. The success of Viz, a humour magazine aimed at older teens / young adults, with anarchic and much ruder (or, some would say, cruder) strips and characters, prompted a slew of imitators trying to capture the same zeitgeist. Fleetway experimented with the likes of Oink, and a few years later Marvel UK made a similar attempt with Bog Paper. As the name suggests, all the strips literally involved a level of toilet humour, with parody characters such as Flush Gordon (a superhero who emerges from a lavatory) and Doctor Phoo (a Doctor Who-like character who travels through time in his TURDIS, a time-space craft disguised as a back garden toilet, accompanied by his pet robot, WC1, a toilet-based riff on K-9). Perhaps unsurprisingly, it only lasted eleven issues before being cancelled.

Thanks, never heard of it, i will go search for it. Perhaps make this comment also on the frontpage because most people will read that page and perhaps someone has it or know where to find it.

I notice that all DCT publications seem to have vanished from the website. Did they send in the heavy brigade?

Yeah, I saw it. Having spent more than forty years writing for them, inc 300+ Commandos, and never receiving a penny in reprint royalties I’m not a great fan. You wonder what they hope to achieve, apart from returning it all to the vault (sorry, the library as they call it), because only a minuscule proportion would ever see the light of day again. I might use my facebook page to start a crusade as I’m probably one of the few people who could actually embarrass them. Anyway, at least I was able to scan one of my lost series off your otherwise splendid site, a thing called Day of the Giant from Victor in 1975, now safely stored in my own vault. Keep up the good work!

I’m ten years old again (lost 60 years in a blink)! Amazing site – many thanks for the effort. I’ve been looking for these for years, and here they allare…

I’m still looking for publications that weren’t exactly “comics” in that they were actually partial comics with printed stories – things like “Hotspur” and “Wizard”. Do you have any idea whether these are available anywhere? They supplemented Valiant, Lion,Tiger, Eagle etc and probably appealed to the same demographic.Similar publisher, as well, Fleetway?

You are welcome. I am afraid you don’t find these titles, they are DC Thomson, i had to remove them for the obvious reason. I can point you to the pulp and old magazines blog, the link you can find on the mainpage at My Other Blogs, there are British Storypapers also with sometimes comics in them.

unfortunately colour cover and black and white interiors is pretty much the standard it would seem for British comics. I haven’t come across anything like that myself.
